2021 Tuition Discounting Study

The annual NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study (TDS), sponsored by Vemo Education, measures institutional tuition discount rates and other indicators of institutionally funded scholarships awarded to undergraduates attending private, nonprofit (independent) colleges and universities. See the TDS Glossary for more information. The 2021 TDS survey instrument and help text are also available. Final results from the 2021 TDS will be posted in May, 2022. In the meantime, the 2020 results are shown below. 


The 2020 TDS includes data from 361 private nonprofit colleges and universities, and provides information on tuition discount rates during academic year 2019-20 and estimates for 2020-21. See also:

The report is available at no cost to all staff at participating institutions, and for purchase to other NACUBO members and nonmembers.

A webcast, Results From the 2020 NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study, is available free to NACUBO members. Originally broadcast June 30, 2021, the webcast reviewed the study findings and provided details about the pricing and enrollment strategies private colleges implemented to deal with the effects of COVID-19.

How to Access the Study

Survey participants may access the 2020 Tuition Discounting Study for no charge through NACUBO's Online Research Portal with the steps below:

  1. Click Member Login
  2. Use your institutional e-mail address and NACUBO membership password to log in
  3. On the next page, select NACUBO Research Studies link from the menu
  4. Click Access Online Research link
  5. Select 2020 NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study from the list


Benchmarking Tool Update

**NEW** We are pleased to announce that the NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study Online Benchmarking Tool is in service.This new Benchmarking Tool, created in partnership with Hanover Research, will provide you with additional TDS data analyses that can help you set goals and relevant strategies. The tool allows you to compare your TDS results with self-selected groups of peer institutions.

To access the Tool, you must be a current NACUBO member that completed the 2020 Tuition Discounting Study. You will also need a unique User ID and password.
