Mary Spina Wheeler has served a variety of institutions both through her campus experiences and as a consultant. She brings her expertise in finance, accounting, and operational services to NACUBO Consulting. Her specialties include accounting strategy formulation, chart of accounts, accounting policy implementation, and effective administration and operational assessments that lead to improved outcomes.

Wheeler’s career includes management positions at Cornell University, St. Lawrence University, Skidmore College, Stevens Institute of Technology and the Arizona State University Foundation.

  • Instituted university organizational changes that reduced the annual audit fee by $100,000.
  • Successfully managed the on-time and on-budget implementation of the Kuali Financial System, transforming finance and administration operations from paper-based to a completely automated digital system.
  • Reengineered processes to increase efficiency/productivity, upgrade financial reporting, strengthen controls, reduce operating expenses and propel income.

She is the author of NACUBO’s Guide to Unitizing Investment Pools (Second Edition) and the 2012 recipient of NACUBO’s Daniel D. Robinson Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field of college and university accounting and reporting. She also updates NACUBO’s Financial Accounting and Reporting Manual (FARM).

Wheeler has her BS in accounting from SUNY Oswego and has completed graduated coursework in education administration and accounting. She is a CPA licensed in New York.
