Kvaal Confirmed to Education Post
After months of delays, the Senate has confirmed James Kvaal to serve as the Under Secretary of Education, and primary overseer of its postsecondary programs. Kvaal, who was confirmed with a vote of 58-37, most recently served as President of the Institute for College Access and Success (TICAS). NACUBO endorsed Kvaal’s confirmation.
Upcoming VA Webinar to Cover 85/15 Rule Changes
The Department of Veterans Affairs Office Hours September webinar for school certifying officials will discuss a number of recent changes to the handling of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for student veterans, including new changes to the institutional 85/15 rule. White House Issues Order Supporting Hispanic Students
President Joe Biden has issued an executive order with the goal of “advancing educational equity, excellence, and economic opportunity” for Hispanic students and Hispanic-Serving Institutions. The order establishes an initiative within the Department of Education to better understand systemic causes of existing educational inequalities and to take actions to “increase the participation and success of Hispanic and Latino students in all levels of education.”

A legislative package with the potential for historic investment in social programs continues to progress in Congress. While the maximum Pell Grant would see a $500 increase under the current draft, the increase falls short of President Biden’s request for an increase of $1,470.
